Nyamira kenya science and engineering fair workshop 2019

Nyamira science teachers following the proceedings of the science workshop at Sironga girls.

The kenya science and engineering fair workshop took place today at Sironga girls high school. The attendance was quite well with all the sub-counties of Nyamira county represented.

On his opening remarks, Mr. Okindo the county secretary congratulated the schools that represented the county at the national KSEF competitions. The schools were Mokomoni mixed secondary school (one project), Mochenwa secondary school (two projects) and Ntana secondary school(one project). The county secretary urged teachers to uphold highest integrity when judging students’ projects. The secretary announced that the sub-county competitions shall be conducted by the 15th day of February, 2019 while the county competition will be held by 27th of February, 2019. The regional competitions are planned on 13th to 16th March 2019 in Kisii county while the national competitions will take place between 7th and 12th of April, 2019 at Nakuru couty.

The county chairman for the KSEF, Mr. Manoti, thanked the teachers for the efforts that they have put in the activity. “Whatever the judges will listen to, whatever the judges will see is over 70% your own effort” the chairman told the teachers. He also thanked the principles of the various schools in the county for allowing the teachers to attend the workshop.
The chairman, Nyamira science and engineering fair, Mr, Manoti addresses science teachers at Sironga girls.

Mr. Manoti remarked that there is concern at the region that the senior schools in Nyamira county are not putting the expected spirited effort and raising to the occasion as far as the KSEF is concerned. He however noted that a scientist can come from any school.

The chairman of the KSEF Nyanza region, Mr. Magawe informed the teachers that Nyanza region took position three at the national competitions after Nairobi and Central regions. Mr. Magawe said that if the mistakes made on last year’s projects can be rectified the we can do better as a region. The region did better in the following categories;
In agriculture a project from Nyanza took position 2, in chemistry position 3, in computer science position 2, in energy and transport position 1 & 4 and finally in environmental science position 4.

Erwin Mogusu addressing the science teachers at Sironga girls high school

While addressing the audience, Mr. Mogusu encouraged them by saying that despite the challenges that the KSEF might have faced the teachers should not give up. “We either succeed or die trying” said Mr. Mogusu.

Reactions to Matiang'i's new assignments

The appointment of Dr. Fred Matiang'i to perform functions same as those that the prime minister performed during the grand coalition government has sent shockwaves across the country. Today morning on Citizen TV, Musalia Mudavadi defended the president's decision saying that he is trying to streamline his government. On social media Kenyans have mixed reactions;

Donald Kipkorir’s advise

Congratulations on your appointment as Super Minister. It is a National Assignment that you have no choice to fail. Here is my 5- Cents Advise:
1. Remember your appointing Authority. You owe him loyalty & allegiance without any qualification or derogation. He appointed you without consulting anyone; he can drop you faster.
2. Be respectful to your Cabinet Colleagues. You are with them every day. They have the unique opportunity to lift you up or destroy you. Read the History of Julius Caesar and his fellow Senators.
3. Obey the law but stretch its applicability to meet your Terms of Reference. The President wants you to deliver Big4 Agenda and end Corruption & Impunity. The law should never be an impediment but handmaiden to the desired goal. Don’t break the law, but bend it.
4. Remember the Sabbath; keep it Holy. As you rise higher and higher, don’t let your eyes move away from countenance with the Lord. Belief in the true Living God, reminds us of our mortality and frailty.

According to the Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria, the first constitutional change has taken place without a referendum.
Kuria was referring to the latest changes made by President Uhuru Kenyatta putting Interior CS Fred Matiang'i at the heart of the Executive.
As you read the various messages on the new reorganization of government, you should be aware of fake news such as

The deputy president has his roles spelled out in the Constitution.
Let me take this earliest opportunity to congratulate Dr. Matiang'i on his new assignments. It will not be a walk in the park, but we are praying for him and wishing him well.

TSC TO EMPLOY 5,000 MORE TEACHERS THIS MONTH.

Dr Nancy Macharia with Raila Odinga today at Capitol Hill Square
The Teachers Service Commission,TSC, has announced that they will employ more teachers to take care of the increased workload from the 2019 form one admissions. The TSC Chief Executive Officer, Dr Nancy Njeri Macharia, says 5000 secondary school teachers will be employed this month in line with 100 per cent transition policy.

Meanwhile, TSC has paid the teachers’ salaries for January 2019. The Commission, though, has not effected the statutory pension scheme deductions as was earlier expected. On a positive note, TSC has paid the annual leave allowance for 2018; that has been included in the January, 2019 pay. Another deduction that has not been effected is the housing scheme which incidentally was suspended by the court. Some banks like Equity have already reflected the salaries.
Dr Nancy Macharia also paid a courtesy call to the Orange Democratic Movement’s leader, HE Raila Odinga, at Capitol Hill Square today. During the meeting the two held discussions on issues to do with education and the challenges teachers face.

The start of the end to sports betting.

 President Yoweri Museveni

Uganda President Yoweri Museveni has ordered that no new sports betting company should be licensed to operate in Uganda and licences for the existing companies should not be renewed.
The Minister of State for Finance in charge of Planning, Mr David Bahati, revealed this on Sunday when he said the President gave the directive because sports betting companies have diverted the attention of youth from hard work.
“We have received a directive from President Museveni to stop licensing sports betting, gaming and gambling companies. The President has now directed the board which has been regulating them…. From now onwards, no new companies are going to be licensed. Those which are already registered, no renewal of licences when they expire,” Mr Bahati told a church congregation at Rugarama Hill in Kabale Town on Sunday.
He was speaking at the closure of a four-day conference where he represented the President as chief guest. The conference was organised by Kigezi Diocese.
Mr Bahati said church leaders who have been against sports betting can now praise the Lord because their prayers have been answered.
The Ministry of Finance spokesman, Mr Jim Mugunga, said he was not aware of the directive but added that since it was communicated by a minister, he cannot doubt it.
“I don’t know but since it was said by a minister, quote him. That’s good news,” Mr Mugunga said

Police arrest the first suspect in the Nairobi terror attack.

Police have arrested the first suspect in Nairobi terror attack, unfortunately a wrong one.

Nairobi lawyer Memba Muriuki who was trying to be a hero at the Riverside Drive terror attack was stopped on his heels as police apprehended him.
Muriuki was arrested as a terror suspect but later identified as a lawyer. His “superhero” mission was brought to an immature end.
Muriuki is a licensed gun holder and is believed to be one of the finest shooters in the country.
In 2016, he won a pistol shooting competition organized by the Kenya National Gun Association and came top of the 80 participants.

ADSI teacher can now make money online.

I am pleased of how the ADSI teachers are commending the program.
Gichuri John a teacher of English testifies that the use of ICT in teaching and learning has really boosted the performance of the subject in his school.
Screenshot showing performance of a student.

It should also be remembered that last year a School in Kiambu County , one of the schools participating in the African Digital Schools Initiative (ADSI) Programme scooped the ICT Teacher of the year Award for 2018 for Mr Kayesi. Mr Kayesi is a School Based Coordinator at the Karuri school verseeing all (ADSI) project activities in terms of ICT Integration.
Mr Kayesi

In his remarks he said "The Africa digital school initiative program played a major role in me realizing this achievement, since I joined the program, I have gained a lot of knowledge on how to integrate ICT in the classroom, ADSI equipped me with the pedagogical skills such as designing an exemplary ICT integrated lessons from the lesson plans design, presentation, use of OERs, coming up with learner centered lessons incorporating the 21stcentury skills all this aligned to TPACK skill set..."

Today I have received an email from Google informing me that this blog has been approved for placement of paid advertisements. That means Google will be placing adverts on this blog and I will earn a commission for every valid click that my visitors make on the adverts.
Thanks to ADSI a program that opened our eyes on the issue of online presence. It has enabled me disseminate information to my learner's even when they are on holiday. The blog has also helped me link with many other teachers worldwide who read and contribute to my articles.
I am looking forward to learning more through the ADSI program this year.
Happy New year.

KNUT and KUPPET may not be fighting for the ordinary teacher

As the media continuously report on what the teachers' unions are saying, they have never taken time to understand what the ordinary teacher is saying. There are pertinent issue affecting teachers which the unions have paid very little attention to or have never even tried to air.
1. Medical schemes
Every month teachers pay for two medical schemes. One medical scheme should be improved to offer the teachers quality services.
AON collects billions monthly from teachers yet majority of the facilities listed in the scheme either don't take the insurance cover or they don't offer the medical services sought by the affected teachers.
Where are the unions on these? Could they be beneficiaries of the proceeds?
2. Housing finance
Another mouth to feed is being introduced to the teachers' payslips, the housing finance. The unions are silent about it thanks to COTU Secretary General Francis Atwoli for standing and fighting for workers ( teachers included).
3. Transfers for ordinary teachers
While many ordinary teachers have applied for transfers, the unions are busy fighting for just 3,000 teachers who are heads, not to be transferred. Nobody is fighting for those teachers who wish to move closer to their families or change the working environment.
Why is there an election in our country every 5 years to change the leadership?
Let the heads move to new stations every 5 years. Some heads have colonised there stations worsening the working conditions for those who serve below them.
TSC is right on delocalization.
4. Over working
One worker overworked in the north of river Limpopo and south of the Sahara desert, is the Kenyan teacher. S/he doesn't even have working hours.
Teachers are working day and night for seven days a week. They even perform the role of parents like changing the diapers.
Teachers want clear laid out working hours, if it's 8 am to 5 pm let it be so. They have family too to take care of.
5. Poor pay
Teachers are poorly paid and it is for this reason that all loan lending institutions run for teachers. Many have stagnated in one job group for over two decades.
Let the teachers' unions stop chasing the rats and instead let them go for the giants and elephants affecting the teachers.
The direction the unions are taking today is not the best for the teachers. KNUT and KUPPET may be fighting for their stomachs or cartels or few teachers or politicians or just chasing wind while teachers are left suffering yet paying billions to these unions.

Omtatah challenges the rollout of the new education system in court.

The first term of the year 2019 is to start tomorrow. It's start will not be without bumps and potholes.
The KNUT has announced a countrywide teachers strike that is to start today. On the same day, activistOkiya Omtatah has filed an application in the High Court seeking to stop the rollout of the 2-6-3-3-3 curriculum to replace the 8-4-4 system. In his application under certificate of urgency, Omtatah says that the Competency based Curriculum is being rushed and rolled out in “an arbitrary, unreasonable and haphazard manner without having been subjected to public participation”.

He said that there is no legal, policy, and regulatory framework governing the implementation of the CBC.

The application dated December 31, 2018 lists the Ministry of Education as first defendant and Attorney General as second.

“There is no legal basis for rolling out the CBC since the Sessional Paper for the CBC has not been published in Parliament for debate and approval,” Omtatah says.

He says that to the extent that the CBC is generally being rolled out in total disregard of provisions of the Constitution, Articles 1, 2, 3( 1 ), and 259( 1 ) were and continue to be violated.

Omtatah said the CBC is being rolled out without public participation as provided in the law.

He says the system was conceptualised and operationalised through “an opaque process shrouded in mystery, without transparency and accountability”.

The activist said that there was and continues to be the general disregard for the rule of law in the manner the system was conceptualised and is being operationalised.

Omtatah said Kenyans will suffer great loss as the application will be overtaken by events, and the Constitution and the rule of law will continue to be violated and or threatened. He says he has a right of access to the constitutional court to protect the Constitution and to safeguard his rights and those of other Kenyans which have been, are being and are in danger of further infringement.

“This Honourable Court has unfettered powers and jurisdiction to make the orders sought,” Omtatah said.He said that the system is being rushed, without adequate preparation and regard for its suitability, the national values of sustainable development. He pointed out that the national government is implementing changes to pre-primary education without involving county governments, which devolves pre-primary education, was violated and continues to be violated.

“I have right of access to the Constitutional Court to protect the Constitution and to safeguard his rights and those of other Kenyans which have been, are being and are in danger of further infringement,” he said. Adding the court has unfettered powers and jurisdiction to make the orders sought.

Last month, the government made a U-turn over the implementation of the new curriculum for PP1, PP2, grades 1,2 and 3.

Education CS Amina Mohamed said the curriculum will be implemented starting this month and not in 2020 as earlier indicated.

Amina had on Tuesday last week said the country is not ready for the new school curriculum.

She said the ministry will roll it out when there are teaching materials, teachers trained, and infrastructure put in place. She said the postponement would allow for more stakeholder consultation

“The design is fantastic. The devil is in the details of implementation. We need to have all the stakeholders on board,” Amina said.

She said poor planning and a hasty roll out led to the failure of the national roll out, which had been planned for this month.
President Uhuru Kenyatta appologiza to the parents for the confusion over the rollout of the new curriculum.
